Yellow makes you happy

Beck & Eggeling International Fine Art sheds light on its stock and presents a colourful Accrochage in time for Spring. It is, however, more than a plain Spring exhibition but an exciting mix of works by many of the gallery's renowned artists, such as Herbert Beck, Joachim Brohm, Gehard Demetz, Gotthard Graubner, Anton Henning, Leiko Ikemura, Susanne Kühn, Desmond Lazaro, Heinz Mack, August Macke, Hartmut Neumann, Emil Nolde, Heribert C. Ottersbach, Apostolos Palavrakis, Pablo Picasso, Fabrizio Plessi, Chris Reinecke, Katharina Schilling, Norbert Tadeusz, Manolo Valdés and Stefan à Wengen.

From an art historical point of view, the colour Yellow has had different connotations over the centuries in different cultural circles. Yellow symbolizes envy, betrayal and cowardice. In the Middle Ages, yellow was used instead of gold on panel paintings and coats of arms. Yellow is also perceived as a positive and warm colour, because it associates terms such as sunshine and light. The colour Yellow as the focus of this exhibition turned out to be intuitive, as we noticed how often and how versatilely the artists use this colour. Whether lemon yellow, golden yellow, canary yellow, Indian yellow, sometimes more sand-coloured, sometimes greenish or a rich ochre – everything ist here!

A yellow lemon and star fruit are of course striking yellow, the Expressionist painter Emil Nolde paints a yellow face that is programmatic, Mack refers to the colour theory with his work »Colour Rotation«, yellow in Tadeusz' masterful perspective plays a contrasting background, Lazaro’s yellow refers to the magic of India, Demetz's »Yellow drone monstrance« adds an absurdity to this theme, Ikemura's faming yellow hair gets glorifying, the little Gardener in Macke’s drawing is somewhat more meditative and Brohm's disused yellow motorboat lets the temperature rise.
