With a gigantic golden mosaic consisting of around 80 LED screen modules creating golden flowing light streams, the Italian video pioneer once again provides St. Mark's Square with a real highlight. Only in September, with his spectacular installation ‘L'età dell'oro’ (The Golden Age), he illuminated the windows of Museo Correr with digital golden waterfalls.
Visible like a huge beacon fire, placed between the two columns at Piazzetta San Marco, since 4 December this new free standing video installation has been illuminating the famous square in the heart of Venice with a warm golden light. It is the first free standing video sculpture on St. Mark's Square ever. As even the Venetian Plessi, in view of the conditions of use of the square, always used the facades for his previous video installations, without obstructing the view of St. Mark's Square with its magnificent buildings.
With its form, this three-dimensional staging of video and LED monitors is reminiscent of a Christmas tree – a symbol of the Tree of Life, which stands for strength, growth and renewal. Once again, the artistic realisation of his idea is no less impressive than its inherent symbolic meaning. Thus, in this special year Fabrizio Plessi is giving the Venetians a festive lighting with a positive radiance that symbolises hope and optimism.
