Herbert Beck meets Emil Nolde

Inspiration and Realization

Meeting the great expressionist Emil Nolde in Hamburg in 1952 was the inspirational event of Herbert Beck’s artistic career. »Achieving Nolde's glowing colorfulness was the goal of countless studies«, Beck later wrote.

The juxtaposition of two masters of watercolor painting in the exhibition shows the unsurpassed expertise of Emil Nolde, but also Beck's continuation of this expressive painting in new areas of design and content. Both artists were always committed to their subject matter, and the main focus of their work was the conviction and creed to create the highest possible expression of their content.

This publication was published for the exhibition of the same name at the Olaf Gulbransson Museum, Tegernsee, and is a collaboration between the Museum, the Nolde Foundation Seebüll, and Beck & Eggeling International Fine Art.
